Tattoos can be removed surgically and are usually carried out as a day case procedure.
What does the operation involve?
The defect created from removal of a tattoo can be closed directly most of the time resulting in a scar. On occasion if the tattoo is large a skin graft or even skin flaps are needed to close these defects.
How long do the results last?
The area may remain swollen for a number of months but this usually settles. Scars can take up to 18 months to settle and you will be given instructions on how to look after your scar after your procedure.
What are the risks?
It’s important to understand that you will be exchanging your tattoo with a scar and the results from scarring can be unfavorable, with some scars becoming thick and lumpy (hypertrophic and keloid) requiring further management. In around 10-20% of cases there may be a partial loss of the skin graft resulting in the need for regular dressings. With any surgery there is also a risk of bleeding and infection.
Mr Saour will discuss the potential risks during your consultation.
