Skin surgery is sometimes needed to remove moles which have changed in appearance, other skin lesions, lumps and skin cancer. Most of the time this is done under a local anaesthetic as a daycase.
What does the operation involve?
The defect created from removal of a skin lesion can be closed directly most of the time resulting in a scar. On occasion skin graft or even skin flaps are needed to close these defects. Grafts are thin areas of skin taken from another part of the body (usually the thigh) and require new blood vessels to grow to keep it alive. Flaps on the other hand are areas of skin and fat taken from the adjacent area and rely on their own blood supply to keep them alive.
How long do the results last?
The area may remain swollen for a number of months but this usually settles. Scars can take up to 18 months to settle and you will be given instructions on how to look after your scar after your procedure.
What are the risks?
The results from scarring can be unfavorable, with some scars becoming thick and lumpy (hypertrophic and keloid) requiring further management. In around 10-20% of cases there may be a partial loss of the skin graft resulting in the need for regular dressings. With any surgery there is also a risk of bleeding and infection.
Mr Saour will discuss the potential risks during your consultation.
