Aesthetic Breast Surgery
Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is a procedure that aims to lift and reduce the size of the breasts. Large breasts may result in back and shoulder pain and skin changes under the breasts. These symptoms may be improved after a breast reduction.

What does the operation involve?

The operation is carried out under a general anesthetic. The nipple/areolar complex is moved and repositioned on a segment of breast tissue also known as a “pedicle” to preserve its blood supply. The excess breast tissue is removed and sent for histological analysis and the remained of the breast tissue is reshaped to optimise the shape of the breasts. The scar is typically around the areolar/nipple complex, extending vertically down to the natural breast crease. There may also be a horizontal component to the scar but this depends of the size of the reduction and distance the nipple has to move. Tissue glue is applied to the scars at the end of the procedure and a support bra will be applied. Mr Saour will discuss the scarring pattern with you during your consultation.

How long do the results last?

The results are usually lifelong but may be impacted by weight change/pregnancy and ageing.

What are the risks of breast reduction?

There is a significant amount of evidence that suggests a strong association between smoking, high body mass index (BMI), hormone therapy and diabetes on increasing complications, particularly wound healing, infection and deep venous thromboembolism (DVT). Minor wound Infection and wound dehiscence are the most common complications, followed by bleeding and/or seroma formation. Occasionally some excess skin and fat remains at the corner of the scars termed “dog ears”, and these can be removed under local anaesthesia once the scar has settled. Other possible complications include fat necrosis (hard lumps under the skin that gradually fade), changes in sensation of the nipple, prominent scarring and asymmetry. Mr Saour will discuss the potential risks during your consultation.
